Prior to that day, I had known little fear save fearing the repercussions of my latest misdemeanor. I had been angry, but small anger, not blood anger--not the anger of losing a loved one. I saw that creature smash down my mother, seeing her blood, heard her cry of pain. The fear, grief, and anger it put in me burned like the flames of a star...

--Vhina Drielle T'Evagduran,

4th Princess of Malan

Chapter 27

Catalyst of Ascendance

As Vhina's mother cried out and blood flew, she felt the instant stretch out. Her chest seized and a jolt like lightning shot through her. Sarai T'Evagduran, the third princess of Malan, hit the gore splashed deck, one of the shaladen blades skittering from her grasp. Vhina heard her father's yell as he was still in motion to come to the defense of his wife, she saw the monsters drawing back to continue pummeling her mother's twitching body. A dozen things went through Vhina in the space of a heartbeat, but one emotion skyrocketed through her senses in a crimson haze.

Rage.

In an eyeblink, the fury became an explosion focused to do nothing other than destroy the creatures threatening her mother.

"Get--" Vhina snarled, lunging toward the creatures. "Away!" Her aunt's spellsword erupted into a shrieking brand of golden energy as she lashed out.

The dreadnaught's warding arm and torso detonated under the force of the attack, sending a barrage of blinding blood and parts into the faces of the creatures.

In a single moment of anguish, Vhina had brought ten thousand ancient deities awake in her, creatures that once shook the heavens with the might to cleave worlds. War, killing, and destruction were things those beings knew all too well. Her desire to destroy whipped the eons old intellects into a frenzy.

Without her volition she felt the tao energies rush through her, dozens of masters of force, time, space, matter, and elements bracing for battle.

The next sword swing eclipsed the destructive power of the first, cleaving through two juggernauts in a searing blaze that left only volatized ashes behind.

Several of the brutes leaped toward her at once. Eons old battle-gods, reflexes honed by millenniums of conflict reacted with lightning speed. Slipping, countering, and unleashing the frustrated aggression of an entire race.

Against that titanic impetus the monsters stood no chance, in ones, twos and threes, she tore through them, their bestial roars of pain ringing in her ears. Turning she saw the monsters tearing at her aunt's defensive barrier. A dozen steps, a few swings, she blew away the last resistance like piles of autumn leaves to a stiff wind.

In a breath, no opponents remained. She staggered back through the carnage. Changing back to her normal flesh she dropped to her knees and hugged her mother's still body. The side of the elf princess' face was bloodied, the metal armor of her shoulder and side crushed. Vhina couldn't feel her heart or breathing. Too late. Even with all the powers of Starholme she didn't get to her fast enough.

Vhina howled. The
